9:10 a.m. — Overview of Key Economic Programs and the 2017 Economic Census
Andy Hait, U.S. Census Bureau Economist

The new Economic Census data release starts flowing in September and U.S. Census Bureau economist Andy Hait will return to help users learn about the data and considerations for comparing it with previous releases.

9:55 a.m. — Tennessee Economic Update
Dr. Bill Fox, Director of the Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research, University of Tennessee

We’re excited that Dr. Bill Fox, from UT’s Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research, will return this year to provide an update on Tennessee’s economy. He’ll share insights on some national and global trends and how those relate to wages, jobs and the state’s economic position.

10:55 a.m. — 2020 Census Partnership Overview and 2020 Decennial Operations Update

From funding to political representation, there a lot riding on the 2020 Census. We’ll get an update from Chris Conklin, who helps lead the U.S. Census Bureau Team coordinating Tennessee’s preparations across the state. Kevin McGowan, an area manager with the Census Bureau, will also be speaking. He oversees Census operations in the state and will provide an update on the on-going work to count the State’s residents next year. Finally, Joseph Williams will provide the Governor’s perspective on the Census.

Dr. Matt Harris, Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research, University of Tenenssee
How will declining births, strong net migration and a growing senior population affect Tennessee’s population in the coming decades? UT’s Matt Harris will be on hand to discuss his work on the state’s new population projections.

KaNin Reese, Chief of Dissemination Outreach, U.S. Census Bureau
Bring your laptop and get hands-on training with the new data retrieval tool replacing American Fact Finder. We’re excited to have KaNin Reese, Chief of the Dissemination Outreach Branch at the U.S. Census Bureau joining us to lead a hands-on session focused on the Bureau’s new data retrieval tool. If you haven’t had time to dive into the new platform, KaNin’s presentation will be a good introduction to American Fact Finder’s replacement.

3:00 p.m. — Data Visualizations
Gerson Vasquez, Data Visualization Lead, U.S. Census Bureau

Gerson Vasquez, a Data Visualization Lead with the U.S. Census Bureau, will discuss data visualization and dashboard best practices. They’ll also go “under the hood” with the Census API, showing some easy and practical applications for retrieving data.
