Around the State, September 2019

September is National Suicide Prevention Month

Suicide is among the leading causes of death in Tennessee for people ages 15 to 54. In 2017, 1166 people in the state died by intentional self-harm and the rate of suicide per 100,000 population reached a historic high. Trends related to age, race, gender and geography are all evident. For instance, rates of suicide tend to be highest in midlife.

The Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network’s annual update on the Status of Suicide in Tennessee has a comprehensive collection of data and trends and gives an update on work to help prevent more deaths.

You can also dig into the numbers yourself on CDC’s Wonder Database. This link will get you started on the leading causes of death in Tennessee in 2017 for 15-24 year olds.
