We sat down with Gregg Robinson, former UT graduate, Boyd Center researcher and U.S. Census Bureau demographer to discuss the Tennessee population projections he helped author fifty year ago. He discusses his distinguished career at the bureau and 2020 Census outcomes.

Tennessee could grow by nearly a million people over the next 20 years and reach a total population of 7.87 million by 2040. New Boyd Center Population Projections for the state’s 95 counties are now available.

Population projections for Tennessee’s 345 cities and towns aren’t readily available. So we leveraged the Boyd Center’s county-level population projections and Census Bureau estimates to create a simple approach that can be replicated by communities across the state.

In October, we released the 2018-2070 Boyd Center Population Projections. To help facilitate both access analysis, we published a new population projections dashboard earlier this month.

The new projections incorporate the latest births, deaths and current population estimates to update the projections last released in 2017.
